Education: Ph.D. Agricultural Economics, Purdue University, 2023

Carlos is a Research Assistant Professor in the Agribusiness and Applied Economics Department at North Dakota State University. His research focuses on agricultural policy evaluation and international trade, with a particular interest in how trade policies shape the competitiveness of U.S. agriculture. He has extensive experience analyzing the effects of tariff increases, regional trade agreements, and global disruptions on agri-food global value chains (GVCs) and agricultural export patterns. His current research includes applying general equilibrium analysis to assess the welfare impacts of U.S. international trade policy shifts and examining how trade and multilateral agreements influence agri-food GVC flows. Carlos earned his Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Purdue University and a Master of Economics from the University of New South Wales in Australia. Before transitioning to academia, he worked in Ecuador’s trade sector, gaining hands-on experience at the National Customs Service and the Ministry of Foreign Trade. This background gives him a practical perspective on global trade dynamics, complementing his research on agricultural markets and policy.
